Are you installing new carpet in your home? Caring for and maintaining your new carpet is key to helping your carpet last longer and look amazing. Here’s what you need to know about caring for your new carpet.
Before Installation
If you haven’t had the new carpet installed yet, there are some important decisions that directly impact how long your new carpet will last. A quality pad (⅜-½ inch thick) is vital in increasing the carpet longevity. Try to avoid installing carpet in entryways and other high traffic areas, but if that can’t be avoided, be sure to have mats ready to place in these areas to protect the carpet.
Vacuuming Tips
Make sure to vacuum at least weekly for low-traffic areas. High-traffic areas, or homes with numerous occupants should be vacuumed daily. Regular vacuuming helps keep dirt from becoming embedded. Use the highest head setting to avoid damaging the fibers.
Spill Cleanup
Take care of spills as soon as possible. It’s a good idea to have an approved spot cleaner on hand for spills that don’t come up with blotting with a towel. Be sure to not rub the stain, but blot it with water and a rag instead.
Addressing Snags
When you notice snags or long fibers in the carpet, be sure to simply clip it with scissors. Pulling on the snag will cause more damage, so clip it even with the surrounding fibers.
Removing Dents
If possible, move furniture periodically to help prevent deep dents from heavy items. When furniture is moved, you can address the dents using a coin to stroke the edges of the dents and fibers to encourage the fibers to stand straight up.
Professional Cleaning
Carpet should be professionally cleaned every 12-18 months. A good cleaner uses steam to help lift and remove dirt and stains that have become embedded into the carpet. In addition to helping your carpet last longer, professional cleaning may be required for keeping a warranty valid.
