Your beautiful new area rug will likely take lots of beatings from children, pets, spills, and foot traffic, so a regular regimen of care and maintenance is necessary to keep it beautiful.
Preventive measures
- Place doormats inside and outside exterior doors to prevent dirt, sand and debris from being brought into the house
- Encourage family and visitors to use the doormats to protect all your flooring and especially your new area rug.
- Get in the habit of taking off your shoes at the door. Invite your friends and family to do the same.
- Place carpet protectors under all furniture legs.
- Read your manufacturer's care instructions for added information on how to take care of the rug.
RoutineCare
- Vacuum the rug regularly, as often as three times a week if it is heavily used.
- Be careful when vacuuming a shag rug so that yarns from the rug don’t get caught in the vacuum.
- Get a carpet rake for your shag rug to loosen up any debris before vacuuming.
- Take care of stains and spills immediately. Many area rugs have stain-resistant technology and you can soak up the spill with a clean cloth. But others require you to check the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Take care of snags by snipping off the yarn flush with the rug, carefully avoiding cutting any other yarns.
- Rotate rug occasionally to reduce exposure to uneven amounts of sunlight and wear and tear.
- Have your area rug cleaned professionally regularly.
Some “don’ts”
- Avoid using a vacuum that has a beater bar—it can be too harsh on your rug’s fiber.
- Don’t dry clean your area rug.
- Don’t use bleach on it.
