Hardwood Care and Maintenance

Floors are to be walked on, sat on, played on, and even to take a nap on when the time’s right, and they need to be taken care of. Flooring Pros suggests a regimen of care and maintenance practices be established to preserve your hardwood floor in its beautiful state.

For the greatest protection of your floors, follow a regular cleaning routine. Keeping your hardwood floors clean ensures damage free, great looking floors.

Our expert Design Associates will help you select what works well and looks great in your home or office—and what comes at the right price.

Preventive measures

  • Place doormats inside and outside exterior doors to prevent dirt, sand and debris from being brought into the house
  • Encourage family and visitors to use the doormats to preserve your new flooring.
  • Get in the habit of taking off your shoes at the door. Invite your friends and family to do the same.
  • Place mats under your pet’s food and water bowls.
  • Place mats wherever water is likely to be spilled.
  • Place felt protectors on the bottoms of legs of furniture to prevent scrapes and scratches on your hardwood flooring.
  • Since most wood floors will gradually begin to age and fade, and sunlight can discolor them, protect your hardwood floors from UV rays with curtains, blinds, or shades on the windows.
  • Rearrange rugs and furniture occasionally so the wood’s appearance will age evenly.
  • Read your manufacturer's care instructions for added information on how to take care of the floor.

Daily care

  • Dust every day with a microfiber mop to trap dirt, pet hair, debris and allergens. This will help prevent scratches.
  • Wipe up spills immediately with a clean cloth and plain water or Windex to prevent stains and damage to the surface.

Periodic cleaning

  • Vacuum the hardwood floor weekly using the floor brush attachment. Dust mop it first to get up debris that can scratch the floor.
  • Use the soft brush attachment to your vacuum to get into corners and hard-to-reach places.
  • Use caution when vacuuming hardwood floors. Keep an eye on the vacuum’s wheels, which can damage the surface if you aren’t careful.
  • If your floor has a surface finish—usually a polyurethane surface finish—polish it every two or three months. Because normal wear and tear eventually will dull the floor and leave scratches, periodic polishing and buffing is needed to restore the floor’s shine.
  • Check the manufacturer's recommendations for polishing products and follow the instructions exactly.
  • It’s time to get a professional to recoat the surface of your hardwood floor when regular cleaning and polishing no longer brings back the shine.

Some "don'ts"

  • Avoid using a vacuum that has a beater bar—it can scratch the floor.
  • Don’t use abrasive scrubbing tools, steel wool, abrasive brushes, cleaners, soap, solvents, or paste waxes on your hardwood flooring because they can damage it.
  • Never wet-mop a hardwood floor. Excess water can damage the wood.
  • Don’t put rubber-backed mats or rugs on your hardwood floor since they may discolor and/or damage your floor.
  • Don’t clean, attempt to repair or allow dirt in a gouge in the floor, but contact Flooring Pros immediately to get professional help to make the repair.
  • Never use wax on a floor with a urethane or glossy finish.
  • Don’t use regular household cleaning products, ammonia, or vinegar on your floor because they will damage the surface.
  • Don’t push heavy furniture or other objects across your hardwood floor. That will damage it. Get extra help to move furniture.
