Wondering How to Select the Best Carpet Flooring? What You Need to Know

Carpet is one of the best flooring options out there, but there are different factors you should consider when choosing what’s right for your home. Three main factors to think about are pile, material, and construction.

Carpet Pile
How comfortable the carpet feels underfoot is in large part due to the carpet pile you choose. Carpet pile basically refers to the height and density of the carpet. Most carpet pile is classified as either low, medium, or high pile. Low pile carpet is very dense and short, which means it’s not a very cushy option, but it stands up well to a lot of foot traffic and dirt. Medium pile isn’t quite as dense as low pile, but it stands up reasonably well to areas of moderate foot traffic. High pile carpet has a plush feel, which means that although comfortable, it’s prone to crushing and may not hold up well to high traffic.

Material and Fiber
There are also different fibers to consider. Wool carpet feels soft, warm, and luxurious. It’s not as stain resistant as other carpet materials, however. Nylon fibers are known for their stain resistance and also stand up well to crushing. A lot of carpet options use a blend of wool and nylon for comfort and durability. Polyester fibers are another option with high stain resistance, although it’s typically less durable than nylon fibers.

Construction
Last of all, how the carpet is constructed impacts durability, appearance, and comfort. Loop-cut pile, such as Berber, is constructed of shorter loops, making it stain resistant, durable, and comfortable. Cut pile doesn’t contain any loops and may be cut evenly for a smooth, plush appearance, or the fibers may be uneven and twisted for a rougher texture that hides dirt well. Cut and loop pile uses both cut fibers and loops. This creates unique patterns and textures and helps hide dirt and stains well.

At Flooring Pros we can help you consider the different qualities of each pile, material, and cut as well as factors in your home to help you choose the best carpet.
