Burst Pipes and Flooding Will Damage Wood Flooring—What to Do?

The recent frigid weather that Texas has just experienced combined with poor insulation may have froze your pipes. The problems only get worse if a pipe burst inside your home causing flooding and damage to your wood floors. Unfortunately, frozen pipes occur in homes of all ages, although older homes are especially susceptible to these problems.

If you ever have a pipe burst please do the following:

  1. Shut off the main water valve.
  2. Clear the area near the leak or burst pipe.
  3. Safely unplug and remove any electronic devices or appliances close to the burst pipe.

A flooded home can be an expensive repair. Even a few inches of water can result in thousands of dollars of restoration work. Most types of flooring are very susceptible to being damaged by a burst pipe especially wood flooring.

A water-damaged hardwood floor is almost never salvageable in any way that makes financial sense. The duration of the water exposure is the major factor on whether your wood floor needs replacement.
