Preparing for Wood Floor Installation: Things to Know

Installing a wood floor in your home is a wise choice because of its beauty, eco-friendly properties, and longevity. Before you get it professionally installed, here are some things you can do to make the process easier for you and the installers.

Expect Disruption
It’s important to realize that wood floor installation creates a lot of mess and noise and takes more time than other flooring options. You can expect installers to be working anywhere from 1 to 3 full days, during which time you will need to stay out of the area. Make arrangements for this disruption beforehand, but plan to be present during installation in order to answer questions.

Consider Dust Protection
Installation will create a lot of dust from cutting and sanding, so take items like drapes and decorations out of the room. Be sure that anything staying in the room is protected with plastic sheeting. In addition, you might consider sealing off HVAC registers to contain the dust to one area.

Prepare Room
Installation will go more quickly if you’re able to remove as much as possible from the room. Remove furniture, doors, and baseboards before installation. Some baseboards have a small section called shoe molding or quarter-round that can be removed rather than the entire baseboard.

Ready Subfloor
Finally, make sure the subfloor is ready for installation. The floor needs to be as clear and level as possible. If subfloor preparation isn’t part of your installation contract, you’ll need to examine your floor to be sure it’s securely fastened to floor joists and that it’s in good condition. If it has significant damage you may need to install a new subfloor or smooth out the subfloor with underlayment.
