Whether you’re building a new home, remodeling your current one, or just need a change, kitchen flooring is a major factor in the appearance
Your hardwood floors are an investment that can last decades with proper care. Here’s how you can care for and maintain those floors to increase longevity and keep them looking beautiful as well.
Preventing Damage
First of all, prevent damage by placing rugs in entryways or other high-traffic areas. Place felt furniture pads under furniture to avoid scratches. Make sure spills are cleaned up as quickly as possible to prevent standing water and resulting water damage. If possible, implement a no shoes rule to limit dirt and dust tracking.
Daily Maintenance
It’s important to clean up dust and dirt daily. You can do this by sweeping with the grain, but a more effective method is using a dust mop made with microfiber, which is better at trapping dust. You can also vacuum if there’s no beater bar or if it’s turned off. Removing dust and dirt daily will keep it from settling into the grain of the wood and between the boards.
Deep Cleaning
Cleaning up oil or other grime should be done every week or two. Some finishes won’t be affected by a vinegar and water solution but some might, so check with your manufacturer to make sure. Using a cleaner specific to hardwood is your safest bet. The mop should be barely damp when cleaning. Depending on your floor’s finish, you may need to use a polish about every 4 months.
Refinishing
Having your floor professionally refinished is also important for keeping your floor in good condition. The refinishing will include sanding, staining, and recoating to make sure your floor is properly protected. Refinishing should typically be done every 5 to 7 years, depending on the finish as well as how much traffic your floor experiences.
