Vinyl Plank Care and Maintenance
Since your beautiful new vinyl plank flooring will be walked on, played on, spilled on, possibly danced on and furniture will be moved onto it, Flooring Pros suggests a regimen of care and maintenance practices be established to preserve the floor in its beautiful state.
Preventive measures
- Place doormats inside and outside exterior doors to prevent dirt, sand and debris from being brought into the house
- Encourage family and visitors to use the doormats to preserve your new flooring.
- Get in the habit of taking off your shoes at the door. Invite your friends and family to do the same.
- Place mats under your pet's food and water bowls.
- Place felt protectors on the bottoms of legs of furniture to prevent scrapes and scratches on your vinyl plank flooring.
- Make sure any wheels or casters attached to furniture are in good shape and won’t scratch the floor before moving the furniture into the room.
- For PVC vinyl flooring you should place two or three coats of floor polish on the floor immediately to protect it from scuffs and scratches. Check with the manufacturer’s material for recommendations of brands.
- Read your manufacturer's care instructions for added information on how to take care of the floor.
Daily Care
- Vacuum and dust mop or sweep the floor regularly. Use the soft brush attachment to your vacuum to get into corners and hard-to-reach places.
- When sweeping or vacuuming does not remove the dirt, mop the floor with clean warm water.
- Wipe up spills immediately with a clean cloth and plain water to prevent stains.
- To remove scuffs, rub the scuffed area with WD-40 sprayed on a towel. Then, remove the WD-40 with a vinegar-water solution of a cup of cider vinegar mixed with a gallon of hot water.
- Use rubbing alcohol with a soft brush to remove tough stains like crayons, paint, ink, and lipstick.
- To remove stains caused by ketchup, tomato sauce, fruit, or wine, use a paste made of baking soda and water and rub it in with a towel until the stain is gone. Then clean up the baking soda with a vinegar/water solution of a cup of cider vinegar mixed with a gallon on hot water.
Cleaning Tips
- You’ll need to clean your floor more thoroughly about once a week.
- Look for the cleaner the floor’s manufacturer recommends.
- Or, you can use one tablespoon of liquid dish washing detergent to one quart of water.
- Another good choice would be to use a tablespoon of clear ammonia to one quart of lukewarm water. Rinse the surface afterward to avoid leaving a film.
- If your floor looks dull, apply the manufacturer’s suggested floor polish to get your floors back to their original gloss.
Some “don’ts”
- Avoid using a vacuum that has a beater bar—it can scratch the floor.
- Don’t use abrasive scrubbing tools, steel wool, abrasive brushes, cleaners, soap, solvents, or paste waxes on your vinyl plank flooring because they can damage it.
- Don’t put rubber-backed mats or rugs on your vinyl plank floor since they may discolor and/or damage your floor.
- Don’t clean or attempt to repair or allow dirt in an open seam or a gouge in the floor, but contact Flooring Pros immediately to get professional help to make the repair.
- Don’t move heavy furniture or other objects across your vinyl floor without first placing underlayment sheets or plywood on the floor to disperse the weight and keep from damaging the floor.
