Epoxy Flooring Care and Maintenance
How to take care of your epoxy flooring
Epoxy floor are easy-to-clean, and it makes concrete floors into durable, nonporous surfaces that are high-gloss and beautiful. It won’t trap dirt like other flooring and is perfect for packaging plants, food preparation kitchens, offices, warehouses, and of course, homes and garages. But, it does take some care, and Flooring Pros suggests a regimen of care and maintenance practices be established to preserve the floor in its beautiful state.
Preventive measures for homes and businesses
- Place doormats inside and outside exterior doors to prevent dirt, sand and debris from being brought into the building.
- Encourage family, employees and visitors to use the doormats to preserve the new epoxy flooring.
- In the home, get in the habit of taking off your shoes at the door. Invite your friends and family to do the same.
- Place mats under your pet’s food and water bowls.
- Place felt protectors on the bottoms of legs of furniture to prevent scrapes and scratches on your epoxy flooring.
- Make sure any wheels or casters attached to furniture are in good shape and won’t scratch the floor.
- Read your manufacturer's care instructions for added information on how to take care of epoxy flooring.
Regular Cleaning
- Using a soft dust mop, run it over the epoxy floor once a week, removing dirt and dust easily. This will prevent scratches.
- For anti-slip aggregate coated floors—such as aluminum oxide—use a soft bristle push broom which will be more effective than a standard dust mop.
- Vacuum at least once a month, and if you have visible construction joints or saw cuts, you should vacuum these out, too, using your vacuum attachment hose and tool for getting into crevices.
- Clean spills immediately with a soft cloth and remember that water, oil and chemicals, if left too long can damage your epoxy floors.
- Use Windex for sticky residue and film left on the floor.
- Get rid of stubborn stains by using a strong solution of ammonia or Simple Green mixed with water. Scrub the area with a stiff nylon brush, and then rinse with water and dry with a towel.
- Use a lactic acid-based cleanser like CLR to clean up rust stains and salt film. Create a solution of one part cleanser and one part water and scrub the area with a scrub brush and rinse with cold water. Be careful not to let the cleanser remain on the epoxy floor for more than one or two minutes.
- For getting rid of tire marks, saturate the area with a concrete degreaser and let it stand for five to 10 minutes. Then scrub the marks with a bristle nylon brush. You may have to do this twice for really stubborn marks. After they’re gone, rinse with water and dry with a towel.
Periodic cleaning
- To keep your epoxy floors in great shape, do a deep cleaning every few months. Use either ammonia or Simple Green which is a non-toxic, biodegradable cleanser in a mixture of one half cup of solution mixed with a gallon of hot water. Then, of course, rinse with water.
Some “don’ts”
- Don’t use cleansers with citrus oil or vinegar in them—they are abrasives and can damage the floor.
- Don’t use soap or soapy cleansers because they will streak and make your epoxy floor slippery.
- Don’t leave a vehicle parked on an epoxy surface for a long period of time unless you have placed a piece of carpet or cardboard under each tire so as not to damage the floor.
