How to Care for Your New Vinyl Plank Floors

If you’re considering having new vinyl plank flooring installed, you need to know how to care for it. Vinyl plank floors require very little maintenance, but there are some things you need to know about how to clean and care for your new floors to increase their longevity.

Daily Cleaning
The best way to keep your floor looking great is to take care of daily cleaning tasks. For the most part all vinyl plank requires is sweeping or dust mopping. It’s also important to clean up spills quickly to prevent stains. Vacuuming on the hard floor setting is also acceptable, as long as the beater bar is turned off.

Weekly Cleaning
Your floor may require some deeper cleaning every week or so, which includes mopping. However, the mop only needs to be damp. You can use plain water or a cleaning solution of one cup of apple cider vinegar to a gallon of warm water. You can also use commercial cleaners that are recommended by the manufacturer and meant for vinyl plank floors.

Stain Removal
For more stubborn stains you may need to add a drop or two of dish soap to the cleaning solution. Acidic stains from ketchup or wine may require the use of a paste made from baking soda and water. Gently rub the paste into the stain with a rag until the stain is removed. Scuffs can be gently buffed away with a melamine pad, WD-40, olive oil, or rubbing alcohol.

Preventing Scratches
To avoid scratches, use felt pads under furniture. Place mats near doors to cut down on the amount of dirt in the room, since dirt can eventually cause scratches. When possible, avoid furniture with casters that could dent or scratch the floor.

Things to Avoid
Be sure to avoid abrasive cleaners with high pH levels. Don’t use steel wool or other abrasive tools when removing stains or scuffs. Additionally, avoid wax finishes, as that can leave your floor looking dull.
