Having New Carpet Installed? Here’s What You Need to Know.

Once you’ve narrowed your down flooring options and have determined carpet is best for your needs, it’s time to get ready for professional installation. There are a few basic things you can do to ensure the installation process goes smoothly.

Remove Furniture
The installation process will go much more smoothly if you remove as much furniture as possible beforehand. This is especially true of smaller items like side tables, nightstands, televisions, dressers, and lamps. If you’re unable to move large items like couches, the installers will move them as they work.

Pull Up Old Carpet
Pulling up old carpet or other flooring is another way you can save time during installation. To save the installer time, simply pull up the old carpet and pad so that new materials can be installed. In many cases the strip of nails along the edge of the carpet and pad (tack strip) can be reused so that the installer doesn’t have to replace it.

Protect Decorations
Decorations on the walls like pictures and mirrors should also be moved to a safe location during the installation. The installation process can create quite a bit of dust and debris, so it’s a good idea to either move wallhangings to another room temporarily or to cover them with plastic sheeting or fabric. Just be sure anything you use to cover decorations has plenty of clearance from the floor.

Clear Area to Store Doors
Depending on the thickness of pile your new carpet has, you may need to have the doors removed during installation. If you’re fairly certain this is the case, remove the doors beforehand and move them to another area. If you choose to wait for the installers to remove the doors when necessary, make sure you have a clear area nearby where the doors can be stored.
